SOCIETY:
Society
can be considered as the total representation of all the human relationship which
grows out of the action.
Society
is defined as the group of people whereas culture is the pattern of ideas, customs
and behaviours as well the way of life shared by the particular people or society.
The
five basic components of society are population,
culture, material product, social organization and
social institution.
CULTURE: - values, norms, beliefs, knowledge,
language and symbols.
Value denotes the
principle or standard as a behaviour that is important or desirable
Norms can be understood
as informal understandings that can govern the behaviour of members of society
or an established orderly way that group of individuals look as the
philosophical views.
Knowledge represents the
know-how, skill and understandings about concepts, functions, relationships
etc.
Language is the means of
the communication, symbol represents specific perception, ideology etc...
LIVELIHOOD:
In simple words, it
means making a living and covering the fulfilment of the basic necessities of
the life.
It
covers the fulfilment of the basic necessities of life which incorporates
security of food, shelter and clothing beside health and education,
Society,
culture and livelihood are mainly linked through the environmental context
where people live. Ecology setting of a region, where people live, is a factor
that determines various aspects of the social and cultural practices.
FOCUS OF THE SUB THEME
The primary objectives of the subtheme is to explore,
document and analyze the roll
of all the components of the society and culture, how it promotes cogent living, quality and dignity of life or
encourage sustainable lifestyles.
To
understand how components of society, culture promote livelihood practices and
promote livelihood practices which lead to sustainable development.
To
explore critical linkages among society, culture and livelihood components and identify means to achieve sustainable
lifestyles with responsible production and consumption system.
To
focus on demystification of superstitions & myths and redefine the cultural
value systems
SCOPE OF THE SUBTHEME
Natural Resource
Management:
ü
To understand the local traditional knowledge
about the better management of the resource
ü
To
cointegrate the new innovative practice with traditional management of the
resource for better and sustainable use.
Biodiversity/Wild
Life Conservation:
ü
To
understand the traditional customs, norms and beliefs within a society that
promotes the biodiversity conservation and ensures the sustainable livelihoods
e.g Bodo community of
the Assam with the surname Mushahary believe that they have certain
relationship with tigers and hence killing of tiger is considered as a taboo
ü
To develop innovative aspects which can
contribute towards achieving sustainable livelihood e.g. Eco cultural tourism
Climate Change
Resilience and/or Disaster Risk Reduction
To
understand the indigenous communities mechanism of adaptation to changes in the
environment or any type of disaster. The custom, traditions , knowledge can help in the preparation of efficient
Strategies for disaster
reduction.
e.g: Chang ghar of
the mishmi tribe
To
understand the negative impacts of the traditional norms, culture and beliefs.
e.g: Women not being
considered as decision makers could push them to disadvantageous positions
during the disaster.
Energy
Conservation and Management

understand the traditional method of conservation of the energy and resources.
e.g Alternative method
of the cooking like sun drying, pickling etc .It is important to understand the
pros and cons of the methods.

To scientifically verify and document best
practices of energy use or conservation.

identify livelihood potential in relation to the domestic energy.
Sustainable
Production and Consumption

To record, document and scientifically verify
the traditional method about the sustainable method of resource management- e.g
Jugad system of reducing, reusing and recycling of the products.
Sanitation and
Health

To understand
and document the pros and cons of the traditional sanitation and health
practices

scientifically optimize the traditional societal practices on health and
hygiene and also identify the changes that needs to be made which can pave for
the clean, healthy
and green India.
Use of Technology
and Impact on the Society

record the positive and negative impact on technology on the society.
e.g. Impact of modern
technology on the employment aspect of women, as it deprives them of their
work.

To develop technology which can be
economically, environmentally and socially sustainable

To identify and record various technologies
used in the respective society which
are able to leverage the
environment safety, sanitation and health management.

To identify gap areas of technologies and
address the needs through science.
